The 2026 AI Landscape — Frontier Above, Floor Below
Opus 4.7 and ChatGPT 5.5 are out. Anthropic's Mythos is still under wraps. The model that matters most in your stack now runs free on a laptop.
Opus 4.7 shipped. ChatGPT 5.5 shipped. Mythos remains under wraps. None of those is the most important release of 2026.
The most important release is the one that costs nothing. Google's open-weight checkpoints and the Chinese frontier models — Qwen, DeepSeek — now match last year's GPT-4 on a 64 GB laptop. No API key. No data egress. No usage caps.
This collapses the procurement question. Spend used to buy capability. Now it buys latency, governance, liability, and context length. A different conversation entirely.
Anthropic will ship Mythos when it ships. Plan around the models you can run on Tuesday, not the ones you read about on Friday.
Pick where the work has to live — laptop, sovereign cloud, or hyperscaler — then pick the model. The other order around makes you a hyperscaler customer for life.
Read the companion essay on what sovereignty means in cloud procurement, or get in touch.
